Coats, blouses, and even some clothes to lounge around in…
“The opportunity to come out here today and even participate receiving new articles for my home is just phenomenal because everything I had in the home is lost,” said Dr. Cheryl Major Brandon, a retired educator and flood victim. “My home received four feet plus inches of water. So, all of the furnishings, linens and all of that were totally obliterated.”
Now, more than two months later, Dr. Brandon is looking to do something for herself.
“I haven’t really been shopping for anything because the clothes that I’ve been given by my daughter, they fit,” explained Dr. Brandon. “Some things just don’t mean that much to you. So, I’m just thankful.”
Dr. Brandon along with hundreds of other flood victims came here to the Cortana Mall for the Red Stick Retail Shop.
“It was a stunning surprise, and the best surprise was that when a registered online, I didn’t get registered. I thought I was registered, and I wasn’t. So, I showed up here today. So, the blessed part about it is, is that they allowed us to register here, those who were not registered. They didn’t just send us away,” said Dr. Brandon.
“It’s for all flood impacted victims. All they have to come and bring is a FEMA letter and a photo ID, and they can gain access. All the products are brand new. So we want to make this a pleasurable shopping experience,” said Erika McConduit, the president and CEO of the Urban League of Louisiana. “For us, it is deeply important to give back to communities to help them start the road to recovery and to feel very empowered about the next steps in their lives.”
This event is put on by the Urban League of Louisiana in partnership with State Representative Ted James and KIDS Fashion Delivers. It runs through Sunday. For more information, just head to the link below:
