DAY 4: Complete Team USA Olympic Recap

After an amazing day for the home team, Team USA racks up some major gold.  Here’s Local 33’s complete recap of Day 4:
 
WINS:
 
Team USA’s Jake Kaminsky defeated Brazil’s Marcus D’Almeida 6-2 in match 31 of the men’s archery individuals round of 64.  USA’s Brady Ellison defeated Libya’s Ali Elghragi 6-0 in match 32 of the round of 64, but was defeated by Kaminsky 2-6 in match 16 of the round of 32.
 
Nick Lucena and Phil Dalhausser defeated Mexico’s Rodolfo Lombardi Ontiveros Gomez and Juan Ramon Virgen Pulido 2-0 with scores of 21-14 and 21-17 in pool C’s match 3 in the men’s beach volleyball preliminary tournament.
 
Carlos Balderas for Team USA defeated Daisuke Narimatsu for Japan 3-0, scored at 29-28, 30-27, and 30-27 in bout two of the the men’s lightweight division round of 16 at 132 pounds.
 
Phillip Dutton placed fourth in the individual equestrian eventing, phase three out of three with a score of 47.80, qualifying him for the jumping finals.  Dutton grabbed the bronze medal after completing the final jumping phase, with Germany taking gold and France taking silver.
 
Team USA took the gold in the women’s gymnastics team competition, with a final score of 184.897.  Russia came in second for the silver, followed by China for the bronze.
 
Travis Stevens for Team USA defeats Sweden’s Robin Pacek 1s1-0s1 in match seven of the men’s 81kg round of 32.  Stevens goes on to defeat Uzbekistan’s Shakhzodbek Sabirova 101s1-0s2 in match four of the men’s elimination round of 16.  Stevens also defeats Ivaylo Ivanov of Bulgaria 100s2-0s1 in the semifinals, but was defeated by Khasan Khalmurzaev of Russia 100-0.  Stevens took the silver medal, with Russia taking gold.
 
US’s Gevvie Stone placed first in the second quarterfinal race for the women’s single sculls, with an official time of 7:27.04.  Team USA placed first in the women’s lightweight double sculls repechage, timing at 7:58.90, followed by Japan, the Great Britain in heat one.
 
The USA upset Brazil 26-0 in pool A’s match three of the men’s rugby tournament prelims.
 
Caleb Dressel finished second with a time of 47.91, behind Australia’s Kyle Chalmers and ahead of Great Britain’s Duncan Scott in the men’s 100 m freestyle heats.  Nathan Adrian for USA finished 16 with a time of 48.58 in the heats, but came in first with a 47.83 time in the semifinals.  Dressel for the US came in fifth with a 47.97 time, behind Australia’s Chalmers and both Australia’s Cam McEvoy and Canada’s Santo Condorelli, who tied for third.
 
In the women’s 200 meter butterfly heats, Cammile Adams and Hali Flickinger for the USA tied for second with 2:06.67 as their time behind Mireia Garcia Belmont of Spain.  Flicking ranked  sixth with 2:07.02 and Adams dropped to eighth with 2:07.22 in the semifinals. 
 
In the men’s 200 meter breaststroke, Kevin Cordes placed seventh with a time of 2:09.30, and Josh Prenot placed 10th with 2:09.91 as his time in the heats.  Prenot rose to third place behind Great Britain’s Andrew Willis and Japan’s Ippei Watanabe at 2:07.78, while Cordes rose to 5th at 2:08.99.
 
In the men’s 4×200 meter freestyle, Team USA took second place behind Great Britain with a time of 7:06.74, followed closely by Russia.  Team USA rose to take the gold in the finals with a total time of 7:00.66, followed by Great Britain with the silver and Japan with the bronze.
 
USA’s Katie Ledecky won the gold medal in the women’s 200 meter freestyle, with Sweden’s Sarah Sjostrom taking silver and Australia’s Emma McKeon taking bronze, with a total time of 1:53.73
 
USA’s Maya Dorado took the bronze in the women’s 200 meter individual medley timing at 2:08.79, with Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu taking gold and Great Britain’s Siobhan-Marie O’Connor taking silver. 
 
Madison Keys for Team USA beat Spain’s Carla Suarez-Navarro 2-1 in women’s tennis singles, with scores of 6-3, 3-6, and 6-3 in match five of the third round.  USA’s Steve Johnson defeated Portugal’s Gastao Elias 2-0 in men’s singles, with scores of 6-3 and 6-4 in match 14 of the second round.  Johnson came back with doubles partner Jack Sock to beat Spain’s Roberto Bautista-Agut and David Ferrer 2-0 with scores of 6-4 and 6-2 in the men’s doubles quarterfinals’ first match.
 
In water polo, Team USA beat Spain 11-4 in group B’s match two of the women’s preliminary tournament.
 
 
LOSSES:
 
Brazil’s Larissa Franca Maestri and Talita Antunes beat Team USA’s Lauren Kendrick and Brooke Sweat 2-0 with scores of 16-21 and 13-21 in pool A’s match four of the women’s beach volleyball preliminary tournament.
 
Krishna Vikas of India defeated USA’s Charles Conwell 0-3 with scores of 28-29, 28-29, and 28-29 in bout 13 of the men’s middleweight division round of 32 at 165 pounds.
 
USA’s Casey Eichfeld placed tenth in the men’s C-1 whitewater semifinals with a time of 101.34, then rose to seventh place in the finals with a 99.69 time.  France took the gold medal, with Slovakia took silver and Japan took bronze.
 
Jessica Parratto and Amy Cozad placed seventh with a total score of 301.02 in women’s synchronised 10 meter diving.  China took the gold medal, Malaysia took home silver, and Canada took bronze.
 
Boyd Martin placed seventh with a score of 58.90 in equestrian individual eventing, missing qualification for the jumping finals.  In team eventing, USA placed 12th with a score of 1106.70.  France won the gold medal, with Germany winning silver and Australia winning bronze.
 
In fencing, Jason Pryor was defeated by Benjamin Steffen of Switzerland 14-15 in the men’s round of 32 individual epee.
 
In the A/B 1 finals, Anders Weiss and Nareg Guregian placed fifth with a time of 6:33.95 in the men’s rowing pair semifinals for the USA.  The USA placed fourth in the men’s lightweight fours, coming in at 6:26.82 in the A/B 2 semifinals.
 
Argentina upset Team USA 14-17 in the first match of pool A’s men’s rugby tournament prelims.  
 
In the sailing competition, Caleb Paine came in seventh place in the men’s finn, fleet overall after race one, then dropped to eighth in the second race.  
Paige Railey came in seventh in the women’s laser radial, fleet overall after race three, dropping to 10th in race four.  
In the men’s laser, fleet overall after race three, Charlie Buckingham came in 10th, then dropped to 16th in the fourth race.  
In the women’s RS: X races four and five, Marion Lepert came in ninth, then dropped to 10th in race six.
In races four and five of the men’s RS: X, Pedro Pascual came in 29th, then fell to 30th in race six.
 
USA’s Enkelejda Shehaj ranked 33rd with a 285 score in the women’s 25 meter pistol precision shooting competition.  Shehaj stayed at 33 in the 25 meter rapid shooting competition, with 567 overall points.
 
Melanie Marsalis took fourth place in the women’s 200 meter swimming individual medley for Team USA.
 
Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina upset USA’s Serena Williams 0-2 with scores of 4-6 and 3-6 in match one of the women’s tennis singles.
 
Lastly, Italy upset Team USA 3-1 in pool A’s match five of the men’s preliminary volleyball tournament.
