The Big Business of King Cakes

Local News

NOW PLAYING

It’s covered with cinnamon, sugar, icing and filled with tradition.

For some it’s just not Mardi Gras without a piece of king cake.

The store manager of local Baton Rouge bakery, Joe Gambino’s, told Local 33 that they plan to make close to five hundred king cakes a day for the next six weeks.

Along with local demand, Gambino’s even ships king cakes across the nation for people craving a taste of Mardi Gras.

It’s a big boost for local bakeries that make the cakes, but it is also a job creator.

Some bakery’s hire seasonal staff to keep up with the high demand.

With king cakes flying out the door as soon as they can make them, it’s safe to say that the king cake business in Baton Rouge is pretty sweet.
