McMain’s Children Developmental Center held its annual Wheels to Succeed day in St. Francisville. Organizers said cycling is something that should not be taken for granted.
” We understand the importance of cycling not only to your mental health but also your physical well being. Some of these families can not afford to purchase a two thousand dollar bike, in order to have their kid enjoy bike riding. Our mission is so everyone will have the opportunity to ride a bike, ” Sebastian Alverez said.
The event started when Sebastian’s dad Hyro Alvarez organized a bike ride for his 75th birthday.
“My dad passed away in 2013. Leading up to 2013, we did this ride for his birthday. He told everyone to ‘pay up’ and we’ll give all the proceeds to the Wheels Succeed program,” Alvarez said.
That ride gave kids at McMain an event to look forward to every year.
“The smile is priceless. Just to see the excitement, and the fun of him knowing that he’s going to be able to ride that bike. I have never seen a smile like that before,” parent Honavea Cavalier said.
