The East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office warned residents on Monday of a jury duty scam in which callers pose as law enforcement officers and tell potential victims that they have missed federal jury duty and can avoid arrest by paying a fine.
Reports reveal that callers provide people with EBRSO’s address to make the scam seem credible. When victims arrive to EBRSO’s headquarters, scammers instruct them to remain in their vehicles and provide account numbers to their Green Dot cards, which they previously purchased and put money in, according to an EBRSO Facebook post.
The post indicates that EBRSO does not call prospective jurors, nor does it ask for their personal identification information or money to pay fines over the phone.
