Last year was a tough one for the East Baton Rouge Parish community and the students who call this parish home.

“It was unbelievable what our kids went through. I want to tell you, they’re not back to normal right now. Most of these people are not back in their homes,” explained East Baton Rouge Parish School System Superintendent Warren Drake.

Drake said to the Rotary Club Wednesday, he wants 2017 to 2018 to be a year of growth and new opportunities for the EBR Parish School System.

“It’s not what you do. It’s how you do it,” said Drake.

EBR trailed in LEAP testing results this past school year. So, how does the system plan to fix that?

“We all know… Everybody in this room knows that the key to learning is teaching, great teaching,” explained Drake. “So, the better the teachers we have, the more on task they are, the better off students are going to be, and we’re going to make sure we hold not only teachers, but principals and everyone accountable.

Drake said this next year, the parish will see improvements to schools like Istrouma High, which reopens after months of renovations, along with more programs geared to prepare students for industry jobs.
