Heat advisory issued for South Louisiana Thursday

It is another hot, summer day here in the Capital Area. Even with a light breeze here and there, this heat can be dangerous.

“If you’re out cutting grass, doing anything like that, make sure you try to take a break, drink you something, and cool down a little bit. Let your body cool down a little bit before you overheat. We’d hate for you to suffer from heat exhaustion,” said Mark Miles, a public information officer for the Baton Rouge Fire Department.

Baton Rouge Firefighters know how important it is to stay safe during these hot summer months. Fighting fires plus wearing hot protective uniforms require extra protection when the extreme heat hits.

“So, we try our best to rotate them out to bring in a fresh crew to let the crew that was inside battling the fire come out, take a break, cool down a little bit, just for the safety of the firefighters,” explained Miles. “We don’t want anybody getting injured on the scene.”

Miles said his number one tip for those of you out there in the heat is to hydrate before, during and after.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some signs of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, a fast yet weak pulse, dizziness and vomiting. If this happens, seek medical attention right away.
