Some people may wear red for their moms, others for their grandmas, and for Judy Martin-Davis, she wears red for two very special people.

“My dad passed with a heart attack. My daughter passed with a heart attack,” said Martin-Davis.

Martin-Davis is decked out in red, from her head to her toes, all to bring awareness to heart disease.

“Go red means go support, make a difference,” said Martin-Davis.

“For us, it’s the culmination of heart month, even though it’s just the beginning, but it’s the opportunity for us to stop and reflect on how important heart disease is in the Baton Rouge area, and that it’s the number one killer, and we still have so far to go,” said Linzi Cotaya, a communication director for AHA.

More than 2,000 Americans die every day from heart disease. It can lead to a heart attack or even a stroke, according to the AHA.

“Eighty-percent of heart disease is preventable. So, if you knew that you could stop 80% of your number one killer, would you make that doctor’s appointment? That’s really what we focus on,” said Cotaya.

“God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, and a sound mind, and in order to have a sound mind, you’ve got to have a sound body,” said Martin-Davis. “Go get checked, make a difference, and take someone with you. Don’t just go by yourself, partner up, and go red for women.”
