About 300 AmeriCorps volunteers came from across the country to Baton Rouge.

They all left places they were serving to come and help flood victims.

“The devastation is just heartbreaking,” said Bill Basl, the Director of AmeriCorps State and National.

Volunteers helped first responders gut their homes, and some who could not help themselves.

Teviron Dickerson, a Baton Rouge resident, said that the presence of the volunteers is “amazing because I really didn’t know where to start.”

Though AmeriCorps did not work on Dickerson’s house, they did work on her neighbor’s, who is a 79-year-old Vietnam and Korean War Veteran.

Dickerson said, her husband came to help the veteran evacuate for the storm because his relatives live in New Orleans.

Dickerson reached out to several volunteer groups to try to get him some help, and AmeriCorps saved the day.

“I feel awesome it feels really good. I want to help as much as I can,” said Sky Yeatts, an AmeriCorps volunteer.

Yeatts and other volunteers helped remove drywall and insulation from the home.

Homeowner, Frank Author Anderson Jr. wasn’t well enough to see his home, but gave the volunteers a video message.

In it he said: “I would love to come over to the house at the time, having a problem with my feet, swelling up on me, thank you for everything you are doing for me.”

Anderson is now staying with family and Dickerson said she hopes to get him back in his house soon.

The director of AmeriCorps said the group will stay in Baton Rouge as long as the cleanup takes.
