Crews to begin aerial mosquito spraying

Local officials announced Thursday crews will begin aerial spraying in East Baton Rouge Parish to combat mosquitoes.

According to the East Baton Rouge Parish Mosquito Control District, mosquito numbers are currently low, but could see a dramatic increase in the next month from standing water leftover from the intense flooding in southern Louisiana. Officials also warn mosquitoes can easily travel from adjacent parishes.

Authorities said the most effective way to treat the situation is with aerial insecticides at night. They can treat thousands of acres at a time.

Officials are especially concerned about the presence of West Nile Virus in the parish. Prior to the historic rain, mosquito samples tested positive in four areas of the parish: Sherwood Forest at Florida Blvd., Sherwood Forest at Airline Hwy., Broadmoor and Brown Heights in Baker.

The public is recommended to follow the three Ds of protection.

Citizens may call EBRMARC at 356-3297 for assistance between 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM Monday – Friday. The service is free.
