Tuesday marked the official start for the new Crime Strategies Unit.
where the BRAVE program aims to eliminate gang violence, the CSU will aim to eliminate any type of crime.
This unit is made up of multiple agencies working together.
Carl Dabadie, Baton Rouge Police Department Chief of Police, said, “We have the Louisiana National Guard, the U.S. Attorney, the East Baton Rouge District Attorney’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office and Louisiana State University. Everybody is coming together to reduce violent crime in our city”.
The CSU will focus on collecting data from crimes, compiling it and providing it to law enforcement as a tool to not only to stop crime, but in some cases prevent it.
Similar programs in other states have received complaints of law enforcement profiling people.
East Baton Rouge District Attorney, Hillar Moore said that this unit’s main focus is the data collected by previous crimes.
He said, “This is not an approach of go out and arrest everyone that walks on the street. This will be selective focused returns. This is going to be people that are committing bad crimes”.
The eventual plan is to have the CSU function all over the city, but at the moment there is not enough funding.
Until then, the unit will target high crime areas to keep baton rouge a safe place for all of us.
