Firefighters were dispatched to a fire located near the 1500 block of Williams Ave. at 5:30 a.m., Tuesday Jan. 12. A neighbor reported flames coming from the living room. During the suppression efforts, firefighters located the body of Cailey Duplechain in a bedroom.
Cailey’s stepfather and four month old brother were home at the time of the fire, but were able to escape, although with injuries. They were transported to a local hospital where a full recovery is expected.
Investigators examined Cailey’s body and was then released to St. Landry Parish Coroner for autopsy which indicated she died from smoke inhalation.
The investigation into the fire is still ongoing however investigators believe the cause was due to an electric space heater within the area. There were no working smoke alarms in the home.
