Faith leaders, community members asking for justice, peace

Local News

NOW PLAYING

A prayer asking for strength, peace and togetherness for our community.

“We pray loving God that in ways that we can not, that You will be present with a powerful peace that gives strength and stamina, that gives vision and voice to those whose voices have long been silenced,” said Reverend Patty Snyder. “We would like to express our most profound, and deeply held condolences to the family of Alton Sterling, to his extended family and the community, and to all those today find themselves with hearts broken.”

From faith leaders to politicians, they all gathered at the Wesley United Methodist Church with open arms and stern voices calling for a thorough investigation into the death of Alton Sterling.

“We urge the Justice Department to conduct an investigation beyond just civil rights violations because perhaps some other laws both state and local laws were violated, and they need to be investigated as well,” said Reverend Lee Wesley.

Protests continue to grow at the Triple S Food Mart, where Sterling was shot and killed. Together Baton Rouge is supportive of peaceful protests, and the group is asking for patience from the community.

“We need to have a little patience because we want it done correctly. We’re not talking about quickly. We want it done correctly, first, that’s the most important factor,” said Edgar Cage. “We’re just not about doing one thing one time. This is our first press conference, but it won’t be our last.”

The group is also asking if the Department of Justice finds any local or federal law violations, that recommendations are made to the district attorney.
