Henry Nelson

Police Officer Henry Nelson was shot and killed at approximately 3:00 pm while responding to a domestic disturbance call where three women had been stabbed by a male subject at a home on Anna Street in Sunset.
When Officer Nelson arrived the subject was able to gain control of his service weapon and fatally shot him.
The subject fled the scene and crashed his vehicle into a nearby gas station where he barricaded himself for several hours. He was apprehended after a SWAT team made entry into the gas station.
Officer Nelson was airlifted to the hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds. One of the three stabbing victims also died.
Officer Nelson had served with the six-person Sunset Police Department for 13 years. He is survived by his daughter.
Senior Trooper
Steven Vincent

Senior Trooper Steven Vincent was shot and killed while checking on a vehicle that was being operated by a suspected intoxicated driver near the intersection of Highway 14 and Fruge Road, near Bell City.
Trooper Vincent was on patrol when he spotted a vehicle from a previous reckless driving report. The vehicle in question had driven off the road and was stuck in a ditch. Trooper Vincent approached the vehicle and began speaking with the occupant and then ordered him to exit the vehicle. The male exited the vehicle with a sawed off shotgun in his hand and opened fire, striking Trooper Vincent in the head. The man then taunted Trooper Vincent as he lay on the ground mortally wounded.
A passing motorist witnessed the incident, stopped his vehicle and tackled the subject. He then wrestled the shotgun away from the man while additional civilians who stopped to assist, utilized Trooper Vincent’s handcuffs to cuff and take the subject into custody. They then called for assistance and rendered aid to Trooper Vincent.
Trooper Vincent was taken to Lake Charles Hospital where he died the next day from his wounds.
Trooper Vincent was a U.S. Army veteran. He had served with the Louisiana State Police for 13 years and had previously served with the Lake Charles Police Department for 11 years. He is survived by his wife and 9-year-old son.

Thomas Joseph LaValley
Shreveport Police Department, Louisiana

Police Officer Thomas LaValley was shot and killed when he and several other officers responded to a domestic violence call involving a man threatening other family members with a gun at approximately 9:15 pm.
When officers arrived at the home in the 3500 block of Del Rio Street, in the Queensborough area of the city, the subject opened fire. Officer LaValley was struck multiple times. He was transported to University Health where he succumbed to his wounds.
The subject fled the scene, but was apprehended the next day. He was also wanted for a shooting that occurred approximately three weeks earlier.
Officer LaValley had served with the Shreveport Police Department for four years.

Vernell Brown, Jr.
New Orleans Police Department, Louisiana

Police Officer Vernell Brown succumbed to injuries sustained five days earlier when he was struck by a car on U.S. 90, on the I-10 East split, while investigating a separate car fire.
He was training two police recruits at the scene of the vehicle fire when two other vehicles were involved in a crash on the adjacent roadway. One of the vehicles veered off the road and struck Officer Brown. He was transported to a local hospital where he remained in a coma until succumbing to his injuries.
Officer Brown had served with the New Orleans Police Department for 17 years. Officer Brown is survived by five children and his fiancee.

Daryle Holloway

Police Officer Daryle Holloway was shot and killed while transporting a prisoner to the Central Lockup at approximately 8:00 am.
The prisoner had been arrested by a previous shift for aggravated assault for firing one shot at a woman with a .40 caliber handgun. Responding officers located a .38 caliber handgun owned by the woman and one .40 caliber shell casing, but did not locate the .40 caliber handgun. The subject was arrested and transported to the police station for questioning.
Officer Holloway was requested to transport the subject to Central Lockup following the interviews. The subject had been handcuffed behind his back but managed to maneuver his arms to the front of his body. He then produced the .40 caliber handgun he had kept concealed on his person, crawled through the vehicle’s partition, and began struggling with Officer Holloway. Officer Holloway was shot during the ensuing struggle, causing his vehicle to crash into a utility pole near the intersection of North Claiborne Avenue and Elysian Fields Avenue.
The subject fled on foot after the vehicle crashed and was captured the next day after a brief chase that ended near the intersection of Reynes Street and St. Claude Avenue. He was arrested the following morning and charged with first degree murder of a police officer, aggravated escape, and weapons charges.
Officer Holloway had served with the New Orleans Police Department for 22 years and was assigned to the 5th District.

James Arthur Bennett, Jr.
Housing Authority of New Orleans Police Department, Louisiana

Patrolman James Bennett was shot and killed from ambush while working an overtime detail at a construction site of the Guste Homes Public Housing Complex.
Patrolman Bennett was patrolling a site where homes were being built when he was shot and killed by an unknown person. Patrolman Bennett’s patrol car was found crashed near the intersection of Erato Street and Freret Street shortly after 7:00 am. Responding Officers found Patrolman Bennett inside the patrol car fatally wounded.
Patrolman Bennett had served with the Housing Authority of New Orleans Police Department for two years and had previously served with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office for 13 years.

Juandre Gilliam
Jeanerette Police Department, Louisiana
End of Watch: Tuesday, April 7, 2015
Police Officer Juandre Gilliam was killed in a crash during a vehicle pursuit at approximately 10:30 pm.
A vehicle he was attempting to stop for a traffic violation fled, and he pursued it onto St. Peter Street where his vehicle overturned near Route 182. Officer Gilliam was extricated from the vehicle and transported to Iberia General Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Both occupants of the vehicle, one adult and one juvenile, were arrested a short time later.
Officer Gilliam had served with the Jeanerette Police Department for two years but had only graduated from the police academy three weeks prior to the crash.
