How to not get scammed by contractors

Local News

NOW PLAYING

We are just weeks away from hurricane season, and after the heavy storms the Capital Area experienced Thursday night, homeowners are looking for repairs.

“Due to the recent storms, and especially the storm last night, we’ve been inundated with calls,” said David Brown, the owner of Ryson Roofing.

Ryson Roofing has been in business here in the Capital City for decades.

“We’re a family owned company. I’m an LSU graduate. We’ve been around over 20 years helping residents around the Baton Rouge area,” said Brown.

This time of year isn’t just a time for storms, but a time for scammers. So what should you look out for?

“Make sure your contractor doesn’t ask for money up front. Don’t pay a contractor in advance,” explained Brown. “You should never pay a contractor until the materials are on site and until you see him starting work.”

Don’t forget to make sure the contractor is accredited.

“Check your contractor out. Make sure he’s a local guy that has been around. Ask your neighbors, your friends, who they would recommend or just make sure you’ve seen them around town, and you know where their office is,” said Brown. “Make sure you call a contractor that’s familiar with insurance claims. Your insurance company can assist and possibly pay for all of your damage, except for your insurance deductible, of course.”

You can always check with the Better Business Bureau to make sure the company you’re dealing with is legitimate. To do that, click here
