There were multiple events in the capital city Monday to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King JR.
The longest running event in Baton Rouge is the Dr. Martin Luther King JR. commemoration at the historic Mt. Zion First Baptist Church.
The Baton Rouge chapter of the NAACP hosted the memorial service, called a mountaintop experience.
The service is centered around Dr. King’s final speech in Memphis, Tennessee where he famously said that he had been to the mountaintop.
Organizers say that they wanted to see what local political and community leaders see as the mountaintop, today.
Mayor of Baton Rouge, Kip Holden, said, “When you see all the effort that he put forth to bring people together and you see the suffering he went through. It was just amazing how he kept focused on his goals and his mission. To make sure that we integrate and love one another instead of keeping separate from each other”.
After the ceremony, people of all ages, religions and race joined arms and marched to the Martin Luther King memorial at Galvez square.
