Public Affiars Director of the American Red Cross Louisiana Region Nancy Malone has provided an update to the relief efforts happening in the Southeast after tornadoes tore through this past Tuesday.
“As the weekend arrives, American Red Cross disaster responders are caring for residents in New Orleans East and other tornado-affected communities in southeast Louisiana, helping residents as they clean up and focus on recovery. Volunteers like East Feliciana Parish resident Cora Lee, pictured below, will continue serving hot meals from Red Cross emergency response vehicles in New Orleans East.
· For the fourth night the Joe Brown Recreation Center in New Orleans has provided shelter for residents, with more than 360 overnight stays. Seventy-one stayed overnight Friday with additional residents receiving aid there, supported by a collaboration of community partners.
· Red Cross disaster responders have served more than 17,200 meals and snacks before Friday’s dinner delivery for residents and responders in New Orleans East. They are available at the shelter, as well as via Red Cross vehicles in accessible areas of the affected community.
· More than 105 Red Cross disaster responders, including volunteers from Louisiana and outside the state, are supporting relief efforts. New volunteers from the community are among those receiving Red Cross training and serving.
· The Red Cross is a nonprofit that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. You can help people affected by Southern Tornadoes and Storms. Your donation enables the Red Cross to prepare for, respond to and help people recover from these disasters. Visit redcross.org/donate, call 1-800-REDCROSS, or text TORNADO to 90999 to make a $10 donation. Monetary donations may also be sent to your local Red Cross chapter.”
