Stolen gun used in the shooting death of an elderly woman, officials say

Last week WVLA/WGMB told you about concerns the East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney has about guns stolen out of cars. Many times those guns end up as evidence on violent crime scenes.

Our Kennedi Walker spoke to neighbors of a woman who was reportedly the victim of one of those crimes.

“The majority of the weapons that we see used in crimes are stolen weapons stolen out of vehicles mainly,” East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore said.

Moore is urging residents not to leave their guns in their cars because they may get stolen.

“It could possibly prevent a crime if you just take your gun out of your car, lock it in your house and keep it secure,” Moore said.

Which is what authorities say happened in the shooting death of Angela Haymond. The 74-year-old was reportedly killed in her driveway by two teens accused of stealing the gun that was used to kill her.

“Its a case that should never have happened, a death that should never have happened,” Moore said.

“I came out when the shots were fired,” Trey Barnes said.

Barnes lives down the street from Haymond and used to cut her grass. He says her death is a tragedy.

“I was shocked, it could’ve been [my] house,” Barnes said.

Officials say the stolen gun used to kill Haymond was stolen from their neighborhood not even a week before her death. Barnes said he had seen the teens before and he wasn’t surprised authorities say they are the suspects.

“They were acting suspicious then they were acting strange and it was like wow they could’ve picked anybody’s house,” Barnes said.

Moore said the case against Xavier Cade, the 15-year-old accused of shooting Haymond will likely be presented before a grand jury in the coming weeks.
