Zipcar expands to Downtown Baton Rouge

A carshare service is expanding to downtown Baton Rouge. It’s called Zipcar.

“We’re launching in Baton Rouge with four cars, including the Honda CRV to our right named Kip after our mayor,” said Vilaire Lazard, the general manager of Zipcar.

This is how it works, you open the Zipcar app on your smartphone and reserve a nearby car for an hour up to a week. Once you get to the car, use the app to unlock the door, the keys are already inside.

“Our low rates, include gas, insurance, maintenance and roadside assistance as well as 180 miles a day,” explained Lazard.

EBR Metro Councilwoman Tara Wicker already has one new customer in mind, her 20-year-old daughter who works downtown.

“I said, it’s a Zipcar. I said, it’s a carshare. So, no longer do you have to depend on mom and daddy, when we’re late or when you need a ride, all you have to do is get a Zipcar and you can get to wherever you need to go in a few minutes,” said Wicker.

Mayor Holden said new transportation options are especially important after tens of thousands lost their vehicles in the August flooding.

“It will allow people without vehicles to rent a vehicle by the hour, and thus afford them the opportunity to travel to appointments, gain access to grocery stores, pharmacies, and meet their everyday needs,” concluded Holden.

Membership is $35, but Zipcar is waiving the fee if you sign up for the Downtown Baton Rouge service. LSU and the New Orleans International Airport are already using the service.
