BATON ROUGE, La.—A new study ranked the best and worst school systems in the country.

Local 33’s Lucy Hayes reports, one local educator says our state’s grade may be connected to state budget issues.

WalletHub is giving Louisiana’s school system an F. The state ranked dead last in a new study measuring 17 different factors from dropout rates to test scores.

“Louisiana has a reputation of being last in education from many years back,” said Louisiana association of Educators President Deborah Meaux.

A local educator says the persistent problems could be connected to the budget.

“We have to overcome some funding issues, and not only funding, but equity in funding. We have a number of places throughout the state where the schools are doing extremely well, and many of those school are located in affluent areas. We have to make sure we are getting funding to the areas that are not as affluent,”said Meaux.

WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia. They broke down the factors into two categories– school system quality and school system safety.

But she says it’s not all bad reports:

“However, in recent years we have been progressing. We have been making progress, and of course so are the other states in the union. It is a moving target.”
