Zachary Police revealed Wednesday that the suspect and victim in a deadly shooting Saturday may have known each other.
Police said it all began when Flanagan saw three teens allegedly burglarizing his home.
Zachary Police Chief David McDavid said 58-year-old Terry Flanagan got a call about his home being burglarized. Authorities said Flanagan saw the three teens when he came home.
Police said Flanagan began firing shots at the home. McDavid said 15-year-old Chadrick Brooks Spurlock jumped out the window.
“Mr. Flanagan shot him in the side, while he was on the ground and shot him again,” McDavid said.
Authorities said Flanagan then drug Spurlock’s body away from his yard to another yard.
Flanagan is charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
“We felt that Mr. Flanagan’s life was not in danger. We think he had the opportunity to call the police department,” McDavid said.
Police said Flanagan was sentenced to life in prison for being a habitual offender, but he had recently been released early.
“It’s very frustrating. Since July we have had many individuals that are committing crime here that have no business being out of jail,” McDavid said.
McDavid also said video evidence linked Flanagan to theft from the Zachary Walmart.
Authorities said the two teens that were allegedly burglarizing Flanagan’s home are linked to at least ten car thefts.
Melvin Brooks, 18, and Dwighttess Thomas, 19, were both arrested on three counts of aggravated burglary and seven counts of simple burglary, according to police.
McDavid said there is reason to believe Flanagan knew Brooks and Thomas.
“There’s indication they knew what he was doing and there’s possibly indication they were involved also,” McDavid said.
Authorities said Thomas was also linked to a drive by on Chestnut Street.
