After an exciting Day 5 of the Olympic games in Rio, Team USA pulled off some impressive wins. Here’s Local 33’s recap:
WINS:
USA’s Zach Garrett defeated Malaysia’s Haziq Kamaruddin 6-0 in the men’s archery individuals round of 64, and Canada’s Crispin Duenas 7-3 int the round of 32.
Team USA defeated Serbia 110-84 in game eight of group B’s women’s basketball preliminary tournament. The men gained a win by only 10 points at 98-88 against Australia in group A’s game eight of the preliminary tournament.
April Ross and Kerri Walsh-Jennings won their match against Switzerland’s Isabelle Forrer and Anouk Verge-Depre 2-1 with scores of 21-14, 22-24, and 15-12 in pool C’s match six in the women’s beach volleyball preliminary rounds.
In the men’s 200 meter individual medley heats, Ryan Lochte took first place at 1:57.38 with Michael Phelps taking 3rd place at 1:58.41 behind Germany’s Philip Heintz in 2nd. Phelps rose to take 1st in the semifinals at 1:55.78, with Lochte dropping to 2nd at 1:56.28.
Josh Prenot came in 2nd to take the silver in the men’s 200 meter Breaststroke at 2:07.53 behind Kazakistan’s Dmitriy Balandin taking gold and in front of Russia’s Anton Chupkov taking the bronze medal.
Finally, Nathan Adrian won the bronze medal in the men’s 100 meter Freestyle at 47.85, behind Belgium’s Pieter Timmer in 2nd place for the silver medal, and Australia’s Kyle Chalmers in first place for the gold.
In Volleyball, the women of Team USA beat Serbia 3-1 in pool A’s match 7 preliminary tournament, and Team USA beat France in group B’s match seven of the men’s Water Polo tournament preliminary.
LOSSES:
Casey Patterson and Jake Gibb for Team USA fell to Spain’s Adrian Gavira-Collado and Pablo Herrera Allepuz 1-2 with scores of 19-21, 21-16, and 7-15 in pool F’s match five of the men’s beach volleyball tournament preliminaries.
Michal Smolen placed 12th with a time of 97.87 in the men’s canoeing/kayaking K-1 whitewater semifinals.
Laura Graves placed 5th riding Verdades and scoring 78.071, and Steffen Peters placed 6th riding Legolas 92 with a 77.614 score in Equestrian’s Individual Dressage phase one of two for Grand Prix qualification.
Nzingha Prescod defeated Mexico’s Nataly Michel 15-9, and Lee Kiefer defeated Lebanon’s Mona Shaito 15-3 in the women’s Fencing Individual Foil, rounds of 32; Prescod was then defeated by France’s Astrid Guyart 11-14 and Keifer by China’s Yongshi Liu 9-15 in the rounds of 16. eli Dershwitz was defeated by Belgium’s Seppe Van Holsbeke 12-15.
Colton Brown defeat Iszlam Monier Suliman for Sudan 100-0 in the men’s Judo rounds of 32 at 90kg, but lost to France’s Iddir Alexandre 0s1-10s2 in the rounds of 16.
Fiji defeated Team USA 24-19 in the men’s tournament placing of 9-12.
During the Sailing competitions, Caleb Paine placed 12th with 38 total points in race three of the men’s Finn, but dropped to 7th with 41 total points in the fourth race. Charlie Buckingham placed 11th with 67 total points in race five of the men’s Laser, then dropped to 15th in race six with 93 total points. Stuart McNay and David Hughes placed 10th with 10 total points in the first race of the men’s 470, and rose to 8th in race two with 17 total points. Bora Gulari and Louisa Chafee placed 13th with 13 total points in race one of the Mixed Nacra 17, then rose to 11th with 22 total points in race two. In the women’s Laser Radial, Paige Railey earned 49 points to place 5th in race five, then dropped to 7th with 56 total points in race six.
Will Brown scored 555 points in men’s 50 meter pistol Shooting, and Jay Shi placed 14th with 553 points. Josh Richmond scored 135 points in men’s Double Trap, placing him at 7th, with Glenn Eller at 14th place with 131 total points.
In the women’s 100 meter Freestyle Swimming heats, Abbey Weitziel placed 7th with a time of 53.54, then dropped to 8th in the semifinals with a time of 53.53. Molly Hannis placed 12th with a time of 2:24.74 in the 200 meter Breaststroke heats, with Lilly King coming in at 2:25.89 in 15th place. Hannis dropped to 16th place in the semifinals at 2:26.80, and King rose to 12th place at 2:24.59. Cammile Adams placed 4th in the women’s 200 meter Butterfly finals at 2:09.90, behind Japan earning bronze, Australia earning silver, and Spain earning gold.
