Update: The time for the line to move through the area has pushed back a few hours. It looks like the line will pass between 10 p.m. and 12 a.m. It will continue to rain overnight and throughout the morning and early afternoon. After 2 p.m., we should be dry, and we may even get a glimpse of sunshine.

The National Weather Service has placed East Baton Rouge Parish and the surrounding parishes under a slight risk for scattered severe storms mainly this afternoon and evening. The main threats are damaging winds and heavy rainfall, but a tornado cannot be ruled out. Wind gusts could exceed 60 mph. Flooding could be a factor for areas with poor drainage as well as low lying areas.

Total rainfall predictions are between 2-4″, but higher amounts are possible. The record rainfall for January 2 is 2.45″, which was set in 1911, so this record could be broken. The timing for the line of storms looks to be between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., and overnight, we’ll continue to see storms and scattered showers.

We’ll continue to see showers in the morning, but another line of rain will pass through the region ahead of a second cold front between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. The rest of the day will mainly be dry, but there is a chance for scattered showers in the evening. The weekend, however, will be nice and dry.

Until then, make sure that you have multiple ways of receiving alerts, and designate a safe space in case a warning is issued. Be sure to follow along for updates.
